I get a lot of requests from supplement company founders to come on the podcast. 99% of the time, it’s not a fit. Today’s guest is different. Dr. John E. Lewis, Ph.D. studies the effects of nutrition, dietary supplementation, and exercise on various aspects of human health including to improve brain health.

He has also followed a whole food plant-based diet for over 27 years.

While most dietary supplement companies have little to no history of primary involvement in research and development, John is a scientist with over 180 peer-reviewed publications and extensive research experience. He has spent the better part of his career to date conducting the studies that support the formulas sold at Dr Lewis Nutrition.

This work has led to groundbreaking findings surrounding the importance of polysaccharides for brain health and immune function, which have had led to break throughs with Alzheimer’s, MS, HIV, and various chronic diseases.

Please enjoy this conversation on how to Improve Brain Health and Immune System Function with Dr John Lewis.

In this conversation we cover:

  • How nutrition is an entirely different approach to FDA approved drugs, in treating dementia.
  • How John came to understand the health benefits of WFPB over 27 years ago.
  • How our food system has changed and why key dietary supplements are now necessary.
  • How we can help reduce the risk and progression of cognitive decline with nutritional interventions.
  • The importance of polysaccharides for brain health and immune function.
  • Dr Lewis has spent the better part of his career to date conducting the studies that support the Dr Lewis Nutrition formulas, like Daily Brain Care:
  • Why, “Inflammation is the underlining aspect of all chronic disease today.”
  • What is bioavailability and why is it important?
  • The importance of exercise and has John’s exercise changed with age?

I know whenever I speak to an expert passionate about the nutritional quality of our food today (or lack there of) I can feel overwhelmed. Similar to when I invite a doctor on the show who advocates 100% sugar, oil, salt free.

The thing is, as John so rightly shared – a supplement will never be the silver bullet.

However, absolutely the right supplements can be very useful when combined with a diverse whole food plant-based diet and exercise.

Although seeking perfect is futile – there is still huge value in constantly striving to get better. Constantly upgrading our nutrition, progressing our exercise and evolving ourselves.
