John E. Lewis, Ph.D. | Nutrition Scientist and Researcher
John E. Lewis, Ph.D. is the Founder and President of Dr Lewis Nutrition®.
I have spent my career at the intersection of nutrition science and human health, running clinical trials, publishing peer-reviewed research, and translating that science into products and guidance that help real people. I have a passion for helping others to improve their health, and I will continue to study the application of nutrition, dietary supplements, and exercise for the benefit of mankind.
What I Do Myself
I have eaten a whole-food, plant-based diet since 1999. I have previously competed as a drug-free bodybuilder and continue to engage in daily, strenuous bodybuilding exercise. I take Daily Brain Care every day in the same form anyone else can buy. These behaviors are the keys to my own personal commitment to being healthy, not a guarantee of anything. I also state what I do because I will not ask you to do anything I have not done myself.

Professional Career
I am the Founder and President of Dr Lewis Nutrition® and past
full-time Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and now Voluntary Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. I am a Diplomate, Faculty Member, and Advisor of the Medical Wellness Association. I have also been the principal investigator of over 30 different studies on human health in my research career. During that time, I either directly raised or indirectly supported raising over $23 million in grants, gifts, and contracts for research studies and clinical trials and educational programs for medical students. In addition to my research, I have been an invited national and international lecturer and guest speaker at conferences and as a guest on television shows. I have over 180 peer-reviewed publications in some of the world’s leading scientific journals. I have mentored many students, from undergraduates to post-doctoral trainees, in how to conduct clinical research and how to apply the principles of health promotion in daily practice.

Landmark Research
Journal of Alzheimer's Disease
Lewis, J. E., McDaniel, H. R., Agronin, M. E., Loewenstein, D. A., Riveros, J., Mestre, R., Martinez, M., Colina, N., Abreu, D., Konefal, J., Woolger, J. M., & Ali, K. H. (2013). The effect of an aloe polymannose multinutrient complex on cognitive and immune functioning in Alzheimer's disease. Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, 33(2), 393–406. https://doi.org/10.3233/JAD-2012-121381
This 12-month open-label trial demonstrated statistically and clinically significant improvements in cognition (ADAS-cog), inflammation (TNFα, VEGF), immune function (CD4/CD8 ratio), immune balance (Th1/Th2 ratio), and adult stem cells (CD14+ cells) in persons with moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease. The trial was open-label and included no placebo group, so it does not show that any dietary supplement treats, cures, mitigates, or prevents disease, and I make no such claim.
Research Interests
My research has focused on evaluating the effects of nutrition, dietary supplements, and exercise on human health, particularly brain health, immune function, and metabolic wellness. Over the course of my career, I have worked with my colleagues to find natural, physiologically aligned approaches to helping people achieve and maintain health.
A defining moment came when I ran a landmark 12-month clinical trial testing an aloe polysaccharide multi-nutrient complex in persons with moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease. Although at the time I thought this promising study was going to take my academic career to another level, it actually led to my departure from academics and into the dietary supplement industry. I could not secure additional funding to extend the research, so I decided to go into business to try to reach more people about what I had discovered.
Why I founded Dr Lewis Nutrition®
I maintain my academic affiliation because I enjoy the connection, but I left full-time research because I realized the gap between what peer-reviewed nutrition science shows and what most people actually do is enormous and closing that gap requires more than publishing papers. Dr Lewis Nutrition® is my vehicle for translating decades of research into practical guidance and science-backed products that support cognitive function, healthy immune balance, and metabolic health.
